– record store day 2014 –
we were in savannah this weekend for easter, which happened to coincide with record store day 2014. i was able to find a couple of locations that were participating though, so my dad and i decided to see what savannah had to offer. after a uneventful trip to rody’s (their shipment hadn’t arrived), my dad and i headed to graveface records & curiosities, which turned out to be awesome!
we didn’t get there until after noon, the joys of parenthood, so i missed out on the main items i was looking for (ie. chvrches, lcd soundsytem). it was still fun though. they were super packed and had a ton of great stuff, including a couple of items i found for my brother. i definitely plan on visiting graveface next time i’m in savannah!
i have to vent that although i still enjoy record store day, it’s definitely becoming overpriced. i really enjoy ultimate alternative waivers by built to spill and the first album by pinback, however i don’t need them on vinyl for $25.
next door to graveface was this adorable bakery & sandwich shop called back in the day bakery. their food looked really tasty and they had super fun gifts and notecards for sale.

– southeastern railway museum –
we took the kids to a recent trains, trucks and tractor event at the southeastern railway museum in duluth and had a blast! there were historic pullman and u.s. mail trains to explore (including one used by president harding), elaborate toy train sets for viewing, actual restored locomotive and two-passenger trains for riding and our favorite part of the museum, a marta bus graveyard!
the bus graveyard was awesome! they had different busses on display from the 40s through 90s. there were a few different incarnations of orange colored busses that were especially great. i wish they would go back to the vintage design! you could even explore the interiors of the different busses. the kids liked running up and down the aisles and sitting on the driver’s seat.
besides the busses, there were also big hangers with historic trains you could explore as well as a museum filled with old train sets. we also rode on both the restored locomotive and the two-passenger trains! they took you on a nice tour of the 35 acre site, although the train whistle was a little loud for the kids.
all-in-all, the southeastern railway museum was a ton of fun. we definitely plan on going back when grey is a little older!

– dual-screen dvd player –
we never thought we’d be the family driving around with dvd players on the backs of our headrests, however after going on a long road trip with the kids, we’ve learned they can be a life saver. we’re not promoting using such players for everyday use, but they definitely do a great job at grabbing your child’s attention during travels.
we purchased our sylvania dual-screen dvd player from walmart before a recent road trip to virginia. it was around $70 but totally worth the money in our opinion! one of the screens has the main controls/player which then connects to the other screen. we were concerned the cords would not reach across our car, since one carseat faces the front and one faces the back, but luckily they were long enough.
so yeah, we’ve totally become that family! if you have kids and are headed on a long road trip, we highly recommend investing in one of these players and not feeling bad about it!

– lake winfield scott camping –
we recently took the kiddos on another camping adventure with some friends! we headed to lake winfield scott recreation area, which was about two hours north of atlanta. the group camp site was super nice and had plenty of room for our crew. the restrooms were clean and close, which was a huge plus, and we could pull right up to our camp site.
we really liked fort mountain state park, but the hike in to the group site was pretty strenuous for our first family camping trip. not to mention the bear siting and the outhouse!
we pretty much just stuck around the camp site during our outing. others went swimming at the lake, however it was so peaceful around the campfire with the kids napping, we decided to stick around.
i would say we got a lot better at packing and organizing for this camping trip. it’s hard to tell what you will definitely need for kid-friendly camping on your first outing, so we ended up bringing way too much last time.
we cooked group meals on this trip, which made it easy only having to plan for a couple meals versus the entire weekend. it was nice having an evening where you did not have to deal with cooking!
although we will most likely continue trying out other campgrounds, we would definitely head back to lake winfield scott!

– white tiger –
on a recent trip to athens for a friend’s wedding, we made a visit to white tiger. we actually hung out with owner ken (& melinda) at the wedding reception the night before. this little gem of a restaurant is hidden back in the historic boulevard district in an unassuming 100+ year old building. white tiger captures the good, easy, comfortable feeling of athens, ga. we love it!
we hit up the all-you-can-eat sunday brunch, which was quite amazing! it was $12 and included coffee and orange juice. the best part of this delicious buffet was the smoked pork! who said you shouldn’t eat bbq with your breakfast?
besides smoked pork, we are big fans of white tiger’s pimento & cheese. check out their menu for all they have to offer.
we will definitely head back to white tiger on future athens adventures!
