– winter wonderland –

here are more photos from our recent snowmageddon! we thoroughly enjoyed the winter weather, hopefully it won’t be another three years before we see snow again in atlanta.

– one more snow day –

as you have probably heard by now, atlanta was rocked pretty hard by a snowstorm this week. beyond the treacherous driving conditions, the snow was really fun and actually stuck around for a few days. here are some of our favorite instagram moments from the snowpocalypse! we will also post some non-instagram photos in the near future.

before you judge the south for such a traffic mess after only a few inches of snow, be sure to check out this great politico article covering all of the underlying factors involved.

– deepdene park –

we are very fortunate to have such beautiful parks in atlanta! one of our favorites is called deepdene park and is part of atlanta’s olmstead linear parks. it’s also right down the road from our house, which makes it even better. these parks were designed by frank olmsted, who also designed central park in new york city, prospect park in brooklyn, the emerald necklace of boston, the biltmore estate in asheville and the nation’s capitol grounds. not a shabby resume!

deepdene features a large field with a surrounding track, as well as 22 acres of canopied forest filled with creeks and bridges for exploring. it’s a lot of fun for both adults and children and a great escape from the surrounding business of atlanta.

– happy birthday gubby –

for gubby’s birthday, we had some cake with the kids before heading out to try the kimball house, the new restaurant in downtown decatur by the brickstore and leon’s full service owners. it’s in the old train depot across the street from the dq. the food was delicious, as were the cocktails! we are excited there’s a fun new place in such a beautiful old building.

check out their menu!

– tulip tree –

our tulip tree did surprisingly well this year. a few early warm days combined with late freezes caused some worry, however it powered through. i would say general beauregard lee made the right prediction with how cold it’s been.

the blooms were still quite beautiful even with the frigid temperatures. they always stand out against the dormant late winter landscape. be sure to check out more photos from previous blog posts: spring 2012, late winter 2012, spring 2011, late winter 2011 & spring 2010.

– intelligentsia coffee –

our friends rob & ellen recently sent us a gift box from intelligentsia with a bag of fresh roasted coffee and two mugs! we had never tried intelligentsia before, at least that we are aware of, so we were excited. it was a very tasty, smooth cup of coffee, especially brewed with our chemex. we were quite impressed!

on a related note, we’ve upgraded our coffee brewing setup over the last few months. our electric tea kettle was on the fritz, so we got the new variable temperature kettle from bonavita. it’s the perfect companion for pour-over coffee brewers and tea lovers alike. it has a gooseneck spout for easy pouring and the kettle offers complete temperature control for ideal brewing settings. there is also a hold feature to keep your water hot throughout the brewing process, or if you plan on having another cup of tea. basically, it’s pretty awesome!

for christmas we also upgraded our grinder, which was on its last legs as well. we went with a conical burr style from capresso. it actually grinds the beans instead of chopping them, preserving aroma and flavor. the grinder is also extremely quite and super easy! you just set the fineness (from coarse to turkish fine), turn the knob to the amount of cups you want and it does the rest. for our chemex setup, we stick with a coarse grind, which you can see in the below photo.

– happy holidays 2012 –

we had a lovely holiday this year with both of our families. the kids were able to spend time with their aunts, uncles & cousins, which they thoroughly enjoyed, and also received some great goodies in the process! their loot included my neighbor totoro dolls for clem & a new blabla for grey! clem also got a super cool, shiny red tricycle from her grams and gandpa.

we had an easy time picking out gifts for all of our nieces & nephews this year at treehouse kids & craft, our friend kristen’s shop in athens, ga.

happy holidays!
