– elf market –

the east lake farmers market is up and running again on saturdays from 9am to 1pm. it’s open through october and can be found at the corner of 2nd avenue and hosea williams drive in the east lake/kirkwood area. the market features lots of local farmers selling fruit, vegetables, eggs, salsas and all sorts of other stuff.

with tomato season finally upon us, we picked up some beautiful heirloom tomatoes from ora farms on our last trip to the market. we grabbed an early girl and an orange blossom. check out our july 4th blog post for a great tomato pie recipe we used with these wonderful tomatoes!

we also grabbed a couple of lemon cucumbers, which we had never tried before. these were quite interesting. the inside was slightly sweeter than normal cucumbers with a little softer texture, but the outside texture was very course and bumpy with small black seeds and they were the size of lemons. they were odd, but worth trying.

this saturday is the 2nd annual peachapalooza at the east lake farmers market. it’s a juried cooking competition celebrating all things peach! stop by to sample some amazing peach creations!

– summer garden update –

here are some progress photos of our summer garden! as you can see, it’s moving right along.

– another prosecco –

we recently tried a bottle of 2009 prosecco from terra verus. this bubbly was light and refreshing; perfect for a hot summer evening! we found our bottle at the green’s beverage on ponce de leon. it was part of their 25 great values for $10 or less, what a deal!

for another great bubbly, check out our previous post on rustico. the post also touches on exactly what makes up a prosecco, for those that are interested.

– bell peppers –

with the intense georgia summer heat, our garden has seen better days. but we have had some new bell peppers recently and they’re tasty! here’s to cooler days ahead and more veggies.

– rustico prosecco –

we recently tried rustico prosecco by nino franco. we’ve been keeping an eye out for this bubbly since it was mentioned in june 5th’s splendid table episode. prosecco is a dry sparkling wine made from glara grapes, which are mainly grown in the veneto region of italy. these italian grapes were formally known as prosecco grapes.

the fermentation process of this sparkling wine takes place in stainless steel tanks, making it less expensive to produce then champagne. as a result, prosecco has drastically risen in popularity outside of italy in recent years. if you’re looking for a great bubbly for under $15, keep your eyes out for a prosecco.

we found the 2008 rustico at the candler park market in atlanta. we spent a nice summer evening drinking this crisp, dry prosecco!

– so that happened –

i turned 30, which is kind of crazy. to make the most of such a big birthday, i tried to do something fun every hour and take photos.

here’s what i got into:

– life of a melon –

we picked our first ripe cantaloupe and it was amazing! as a tribute, we gathered photos to show the life of our melon.

fyi, we learned that you can tell if a cantaloupe is ripe by lightly thumping where the stem meets the navel of the melon. if the stem easily breaks off, it’s ready!

– garden triumph –

check out our beautiful big red tomato! it was one of the last before our tomatoes were ravaged by the squirrels.

– this means war! –

we found these two half eaten tomatoes in the garden today. i guess the chipmunks have found a way under the fence…  what to do?

– turning red –

our tomatoes are turning red. we are very excited! our corn is also getting pretty big and we have baby bell and jalapeño peppers. we love our garden!
